Here’s the arithmetic.
Whether a distributed engineer works with your team or hands off to it comes down to one number: shared working hours. Below is that number, computed city by city against US Eastern and Pacific, daylight-saving quirks included, plus the research on what it changes.
THE SHORT VERSION
A workday you share, or a relay you manage.
Latin American cities share six to eight of a US Eastern team’s working hours. Bogotá and Lima track it almost exactly. Mexico keeps six or seven with the Pacific, where Tijuana runs on Pacific time outright. Eastern Europe shares one or two hours with the East Coast and none with the West. India shares none with either. Two decades of research on distributed software teams says coordination cost tracks exactly this number.4, 5
“Shared 9–5” is the overlap of both cities’ 9:00–17:00 local. Ranges exist because US clocks move twice a year and most of these cities’ clocks don’t. Plan on the low end.
WHAT SHARED HOURS CHANGE
Overlap isn’t comfort. It’s throughput.
The research is old enough to have a beard and it still holds: coordination costs in distributed software teams rise with time separation and fall as working hours overlap.4 Studies of offshored projects find the extra costs land in coordination, control, and knowledge transfer. A shared day does that work for free.5
THE FINE PRINT ON CLOCKS
Most of these clocks stopped moving. Yours didn’t.
Recruiters quote the flattering half of the year. The ranges above exist for reasons you can check:1–3
Mexico abolished daylight saving in October 2022, so Mexico City sits at UTC−6 all year and drifts an hour against you each US summer. Baja California kept the US schedule, which is why Tijuana runs on Pacific time twelve months a year. Brazil ended DST in 2019; São Paulo holds UTC−3. Chile still shifts, but in the opposite season: Santiago swings between matching your Eastern day exactly and trailing it by two hours. India has never observed DST and sits at +5:30, so its offset to a US coast is nine and a half hours on the best day of the year.
Plan on the low end of each range. If a vendor quotes you a single number, ask which month it’s true in.

How much overlap does a distributed team actually need?
There’s no magic number, but the research direction is one-way: coordination costs fall as shared hours rise. The practical floor is whatever your ceremonies, review round-trips, and incident response genuinely consume. Arranging one or two forced-fit hours means somebody’s evening, forever. Latin America gives a US Eastern team six to eight without anyone shifting.
Which cities work for a US Pacific team?
Tijuana runs on Pacific time outright, because Baja California follows the US daylight-saving schedule. Mexico City holds six to seven shared hours all year. South America thins out from the West Coast (three to six hours), so Pacific teams should weight Mexico in the search brief.
Doesn’t async culture make all of this irrelevant?
For a minority of teams, genuinely yes. The exceptions above are real. But most mid-market teams run on meetings, same-day answers, and somebody saying “hop on a call.” Match the hiring model to how your team operates today.
Why do the shared hours show ranges instead of one number?
Because US clocks move twice a year and most Latin American clocks no longer do: Mexico stopped in 2022, Brazil in 2019, and Chile moves in the opposite season. The range is the true number. Plan on its low end.
